This past Saturday I went diving at Egg Island. We started out toward the farther end of the island, and we noticed we were being followed..
A mother and baby humpback whale were swimming along side the boat, closer to shore than the whales we had seen previously. We stopped the boat and watched them swim off, and then we continued to Egg Island and jumped in the water.
We dove for about 50 minutes, and the deepest I got was about 20 meters (65 feet). There were many fish, some sea stars and we even saw a flameback angel fish - which is a small purple fish with a bright orange mohawk on the top of their body. I wasn’t able to get a picture of it because they are very shy and enjoy hiding inside the cracks of the rocks.
After surfacing and getting back into the boat we noticed the whales had returned! The baby was right next to the boat where we had just been diving! He was coming up for air and we could hear him breathing which was very exciting. He swam around us for a few minutes, and then swam off to join his mother further out in the ocean.
