A few weeks ago we joined a group of people to do Powell’s Valley, which is rated as one of the harder postbox walks on island due to its steepness and pebbly ground which was slidy on the way down because of all the loose little rocks.

This walk began in a cool forested area, from which we had views of Sandy Bay. The path was pretty well preserved here so it was not too difficult getting down to the postbox, which had been moved from its original spot which was down at the very bottom at a rocky beach.

As we continued down, the environment changed from woods to an exposed rocky cliff face where we could see the ocean. We continued and made it to the postbox.

Then the adventure climbing began. After the postbox the path was labeled ‘climb at your own risk’ because of the steepness and also because this part of the trail is less maintained, however there were still ropes to help maneuver down the trail at difficult spots.

We slid down the rest of the trail, (sometimes on our butts) and finally made it to the bottom which was a nice little rocky beach where we had lunch and rested before making our way back up.

The walk back up felt faster than the way down, but the whole hike in total counting the break at the bottom was about five hours - we left at 10:30am and were back by 3:30.
